History of Tsunami

Tsunami was created in 1987 when a young couple attending the University of Utah began making fleece blankets in their basement in Salt Lake City.  By purchasing a whipstitch machine, they were able to give a finished look to their product with what was then considered a novel outdoor fabric.

Soon after they began experimenting with fleece and its use as an outerwear fabric.  As opposed to simply making traditional outerwear silhouettes, they began using fleece to make styles that embraced contemporary trends.  Jackets and vests with buttons, tape trims and lining were the foundation of initial collections and created a new category within the outdoor and winter sport industries.

In 1992, Tsunami entered into the first of several licenses with Canadian manufacturers that enabled the brand to pursue more sophisticated styling and better quality and production.  In or around this time the brand began utilizing jacquard pile fabrication that gave more definitive detail to its prints.  Soon Tsunami became know for its “art” wear of fall and winter themed novelty jackets and outerwear.

In 2001, Gemini Fashions of Canada purchased the label and vastly increased sourcing and manufacturing opportunities.  Tsunami expanded its single season fall/winter efforts to include a spring collection of casual lifestyle sportswear appropriate for its specialty customers.  The label is a year-round stable on the floor of better outdoor, resort and women’s boutique stores.

Today, Tsunami continues to capture the imagination of the casual lifestyle customer, creating new and exciting clothing for women on the go.
